For our class assignment last week, we needed to do either 20 photos around the house or something to do with the season. To add a little originality to the project, and since my house is not generally very interesting, I combined both.

Here are four pictures:

Autumn

Winter

Spring

Summer

I bought many flowers to make more macro flower photographs (yup, I’m still a Macro fanatic), so these are found in my house as the assignment specified. What do you think of the “Seasons”?

PS:  The pine cone decoration is from a Christmas tree. Yes, our Christmas tree is still up. Isn’t it still December? ;)

Lessons of the day are, never underestimate Mother Nature and wear proper footwear when out in the middle of winter.

That being said, I had quite the adventure this weekend. We had an assignment for our photography class. Actually there were two assignments. One was to take some photographs around the house. You had to take 20 photographs and then pick the best 5 to bring to class for critique. The advanced assignment was to go outside at a location of choice, mount your camera to a tripod and then take 20 photographs but with the camera not moving positions. The camera is allowed to change angles and direction, but it has to stay on the tripod at that location. I love a challenge, so I took the hard assignment.

I went and slept at my mom’s house. She has roughly 50 acres of land on which there are beautiful white pines and other flora, as well as untouched scenery. I bought a pair of sky pants and some nice gloves, and borrowed my father-in-law’s snowshoes and moccasins. After you see the photo of my feet outside you’ll understand why I wore moccasins. These snow shoes are old school, and boots are not ideal. So anyway, I wake up around 7 am and have some grub with mom, and then get all dressed and head out.

You know it’s not a good sign when you fall only 20 yards away from the house and can’t get up. Of course my mother was watching me from the window, about to launch the ROLFCOPTER. She didn’t get to her camera in time though, I got up and was on my way.

Now, the scenery is just awesome, but darn there was a lot of snow. No crust had formed, and I’m not the lightest fellow, so I was sinking about 2 feet for every step I took. But nothing was going to stop me on that day.

After about 40 or so minutes I got to my destination. Well let me tell you, my feet were frakkin cold. The moccasins were WAY too tight. I effectively cut the circulation in my feet. I took 30 or so shots and then headed back to the house.

I had an easier time getting back since I had trail blazed. On my way back I saw a ton of photographs that would of looked SO awesome but self-preservation of my feet was in full effect. As soon as I walked through the door I took my moccasins off to find that my feet had turned blue. I’ll spare you fine folks the pleasure of that photo. :)

My mom took care of me of course, and after much moaning my feet returned to normal. Darn that hurt though. Not the tingling you usually get from cold feet, but like a hydraulic press-like feeling. Not the the best.

Needless to say I worked hard to get this assignment done.  :)

The winter months can be boring in Northern Ontario so to kill the monotony I decided to go out into the back roads and take some photographs. I had driven at least 20 to 30 km in woods with my minivan and finally stopped since I was no longer confident I could climb the hilly roads. One thing I really enjoy about being so far from the city is the sense that the world can be a calm place. I turned off the van and took out the D700 and the tripod and got to work. The exercise was to one decent shot using available light. Here is there result:

Not bad for my first serious attempt at getting a dramatic night shot without lights. I plan on re-visiting this area but when the skies are clear. I would be really cool to have a photograph of this little stream but with some stars.

After being sick for the past few days I finally was well enough and went out to the mall with the kids. They wanted a treat so I got them some Orange Julius, since you know, it’s not cold enough outside.

After they chilled themselves with the drink we walked around and then they found you know what, candy. I never carry cash with me, so forget about change in my pockets. Poor little thing just wanted a candy.

I’ll have to make it up to her at some point in time.
